Intel launches 'mind-reading' brain scan software

Mind reading may no longer be the domain of psychics and fortune tellers — now some computers can do it, too.

Software that uses brain scans to determine what items people are thinking about was among the technological innovations showcased Wednesday by Intel Corp., which drew back the curtain on a number of projects that are still under development.

The software analyzes functional MRI scans to determine what parts of a person's brain is being activated as he or she thinks. In tests, it guessed with 90 percent accuracy which of two words a person was thinking about, said Intel Labs researcher Dean Pomerleau.

Eventually, the technology could help the severely physically disabled to communicate. And Pomerleau sees it as an early step toward one day being able to control technology with our minds.

"The vision is being able to interface to information, to your devices and to other people without having an intermediary device," he said.

For now, the project's accomplishments are far more modest — it can only be used with prohibitively expensive and bulky fMRI equipment and hasn't yet been adapted to analyze abstract thoughts.

Doordarshan, All India Radio to be digitized

The Government on Thursday approved the Rs 1,5400-crore digitalisation programme for state-owned broadcasters Doordarshan and All India Radio in the 11th Plan to help meeting challenges posed by private operators.

The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure (CCI) approved proposals of the Ministry of Broadcasting regarding the 11th Plan scheme of Doordarshan and AIR for digitalisation of transmitters, studio connectivity and network.

“This process of digitalisation of both Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR) will enable the most vulnerable section of our people in the remotest of the remote areas to receive higher quality of AIR and Doordarshan signals,” Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters after a CCI meeting here.

    Chinese hackers target Indian Government

Cyber security researchers and analysts have uncovered the existence of a spy network based in China that was used to steal sensitive, classified government documents from India - as well data from the Dalai Lama's office and the United Nations.

The "Shadow Network", as this network is now known, has been traced to two people living in Chengdu, China.
China is largely believed to possess a Cyber Warfare Doctrine that is designed to achieve global "electronic dominance" by 2050. With a yearly budget of $55 million allotted for it and over 10,000 hackers working in tandem, China is second only to U.S. when it comes to cyber snooping prowess.

As more details emerge about the intentions of these hackers, it is clear that they had targeted the upcoming Commonwealth games in India. The idea was to make Commonwealth games an utter failure later this year. The plans included studying the network architecture of the entire Commonwealth games IT infrastructure. This includes ticket sales, online registration servers all of which would crash at the time of the inaugural ceremony. The hackers had also looked into tender documents for the Commonwealth games network infrastructure. Intelligence agencies feel this could be for studying vulnerabilities in the system for possible attacks.

India to launch latest satellite using indigenous cryogenic technology

India is scheduled to launch an advanced communications and navigation satellite using for the first time a cryogenic engine developed by its own scientists, news reports said Thursday.

The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) - which is to put the satellite into orbit - is powered by the cryogenic engine. Its launch is scheduled from the country's Sriharikota spaceport on April 15, the CNN-IBN news channel reported. With a successful launch, India will join the US, Russia, France, Japan and China, who have also developed that technology. Cryogenic engines are rocket motors designed for liquid fuels that have to be kept at very low temperatures, as they turn into a gaseous state at room temperature. A successful launch would mark a milestone for India's space programme as it would allow the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to launch heavier satellites in future, the report said.
