IBM to provide SAP solution to STAR India

IT major IBM today announced an agreement with STAR India, a wholly owned subsidiary of STAR, the media and Asian entertainment company, to implement SAP ECC 6.0 application encompassing all major business processes.

The deal will increase process efficiency, enabling STAR India to enhance customer experience and drive greater control over net margin, said a press release.

Commenting on the agreement, Sanjay Jain, chief financial officer, STAR India said, "In addition to IBM's strong credentials, the team showcased excellent knowledge of our domain and was able to put us at ease from day one."

He said that it is imperative to be flexible and agile to the changing needs of the market place in order to provide the best customer service.

"The SAP solution, implemented by IBM, will allow us to do that," he added.

IBM said the deal with Star India was signed in February 2009.

"We are delighted to have made inroads into the media and entertainment space in India," said Sandip Patel, managing partner, Global Business Services, IBM India/ South Asia.

"We strongly feel that this is a market with a lot of potential, although it is also one of the most competitive industries in the world," he added.

IBM said its Global Services works closely with over 2,200 organizations in India, spanning across varied industries, providing them diverse spectrum of IT services.

Economy will see recovery this year

India will see signs of recovery from the economic recession in the second half of this year and a distinct improvement in growth will be witnessed in 2010-11, according to Rajya Sabha member and economist C. Rangarajan.

Speaking at a symposium on ‘Global financial crisis — impact on Indian economy’, organised by the Department of Economics of University of Hyderabad here on Wednesday, Dr. Rangarajan said that it was false to contend that the country escaped from a serious impact of the crisis due to economic reforms.

The financial reforms were intended at improving efficiency and the global crisis would have a ripple effect on the structure of capitalism. “Acceptable capitalism would require more regulation,” he said.

He underscored the need for cut in excise duty and enhanced public spending, especially in infrastructure development. The revised estimates of total expenditure by the Union Government for 2008-09 were 20 per cent more than the budget estimates. As a result, the fiscal deficit was estimated at six per cent of the GDP, he observed.

Dr. Rangarajan said the capital inflow, which was put at $100 billion last year, would not be as much and exports would be impacted due to global slowdown. He said the huge current account deficit in the U.S. and surplus in China and few other countries needed to be balanced.

The crisis had its roots in the sub-prime lending crisis which was a result of housing loans obtained beyond their capacity by borrowers. Dr. Rangarajan said the rating agencies in the current crisis were irresponsible in creating a booming market in suspect derivative products.” Regulatory failure was another cause for the global crisis.

Former RBI Governor Y. V. Reddy said regulatory capture by the regulated, moral and intellectual failure contributed to the economic crisis. Only 15-20 institutions, which received maximum bailout packages, had a role in this as they did not do business with one another due to mutual distrust.

L&T, Russian company to build nuclear reactors

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Atomstroyexport (ASE) of Russia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for co-operation between the two companies for Russian design reactors VVER-1000.

The MoU, signed in Moscow, will form the basis of co-operation between the companies and address needs for equipment and other services arising from the agreement signed between India and Russia on December 5, 2008, for four additional reactors KK3-6 at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu and other Russian reactors at new sites in India.

L&T has been playing a leading role in equipment manufacture, construction and project management for pressurised heavy water reactors in India’s domestic nuclear programme. It is the only Indian company to be accredited by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers to use its ‘N’ and ‘NPT’ stamps for critical nuclear reactor equipment.

L&T was involved in construction, piping and erection services for the KK1-2 VVERs at Kudankulam.

The MoU represents a major step for L&T into VVER component and systems manufacturing and services. It will enable both companies to utilise indigenous capabilities for nuclear power plants including supply of equipment and systems, valves, electrical and instrumentation products and fabrication of structural and piping and construction for the Russian VVER plants in India and in other global locations.

Infosys net up 29 % at Rs. 1,613 crore in Q4

IT bellwether Infosys Technologies on Wednesday reported a 29-per cent increase in the net profit for 2008-09 but warned that earnings could slowdown significantly in 2009-10 as a result of the global financial meltdown.

Presenting the results at a media conference here, Infosys CEO and Managing Director S. Gopalakrishnan said the company’s “velocity of business” had been impaired by the global financial crisis.

Revenues (consolidated) increased by 30 per cent to Rs. 21,693 crore in 2008-09. The company made a post-tax profit of Rs. 5,988 crore, an increase of 28.5 per cent over the previous year. It registered a net profit of Rs. 1,613 crore in the last quarter of 2008-09, which amounted to an increase of 29.1 per cent over the same quarter of the previous year. Earnings in the fourth quarter were Rs. 5,635 crore, an increase of 24.1 per cent over the same quarter of 2007-08.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan acknowledged that the continuing slide of the rupee versus the dollar in the last quarter had a “positive impact”. In fact, earnings in dollar terms declined by 1.8 per cent on a year-on-year basis. However, post-tax income increased by 2.6 per cent to $321 million in the last quarter of 2008-09. Revenues, represented in dollars, increased by 11.7 per cent to $4,663 million in 2008-09.

The board of directors of the company recommended a final dividend of Rs. 13.50 a share on a par value of Rs. 5 for the year.

An interim dividend of Rs. 10 per share was already paid. The company, for the first time in its history, has presented an “outlook” that forecasts a decline in revenues. The forecast for the first quarter of 2009-10 ending on June 30 is that revenues in dollar terms are expected to be in the region of between $1,060 million and $1,080 million, which implies a decline of between 8.2 per cent and 6.5 per cent on a year-on-year basis. In rupee terms, the forecast for the said quarter is Rs. 5,379-5,480 crore, implying a growth of 10.8-12.9 per cent. Revenues for the full financial year are expected to decline by between 3.1 per cent and 6.7 per cent. This is based on the forecast that revenues would range between $4.35 billion and $4.52 billion in 2009-10. Mr. Gopalakrishnan said the “guidance” for 2009-10 was based on the assessment that revenues would decline in the first quarter but that this would be followed by “a slow recovery” during the rest of the year.

Workforce

The company added 37 new clients in the last quarter. At the end of 2008-09, the company had a workforce of 1.05 lakh. During the year the company recruited about 28,000 persons, but net additions amounted to 13,663 employees.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan said the “extreme uncertainty” resulting from the global economic crisis had affected the company.

“But, overall, I think we have managed to do well despite the adversity,” he added. “The biggest problem for the company is achieving growth. With growth all problems can be solved,’ he said.

Slumdog team to donate 500,000 pounds for child welfare

The Oscar-winning team of 'Slumdog Millionaire' will donate 500,000 pounds to a non-profit organisation working for the welfare of the underprivileged children of Mumbai.

The film, which earned eight Oscars along with millions as box-office revenue, depicts the struggle of Jamal, a young slumdweller of Mumbai looking for his lost love in the grim underbelly of the city.

The cast and crew including Producer Christian Colson and Director Danny Boyle have put together 500,000, which will be donated to Plan India, an organisation working for the welfare of underprivileged children in India.

"The money should allow thousands of youngsters to get an education and access to good healthcare," said the film's producer Christian Colson, in an announcement here on Thursday.

The donation will support Plan India's in a slum community in Mumbai, which focuses on early childhood care, education, water, sanitation and health. The fund is expected to help over 5,000 children of the city.

"Having benefited so much from the hospitality of the people of Mumbai, it is only right that some of theof the movie is put back into the city in areas where it is needed most and where it can make a real difference to children's lives," said director Danny Boyle.

The cast and crew of the film has followed the example of Anil Kapoor, who donated his earnings from the film to the organisation.

"Slumdog Millionaire is a film which epitomizes the positive spirit of children and the film's success is an inspiration and a way forward to improve the lives of the most vulnerable children of Mumbai," said Kapoor, who is also the goodwill ambassador of India.

Sony Ericsson says Android phone to take time

Sony Ericsson will take some time developing a phone using Google's (GOOG.O) Android operating system, its chief executive said on Friday, but declined to say when such a handset would be available.

Most handset vendors are rushing out phones using Android software, hoping to benefit from consumer demand, but Sony Ericsson said it would be some time before its own offering was launched.

"It does require a lot of evaluation, as well as a lot of testing, a lot of acceptance from a consumer viewpoint, and there is still some time to go," Chief Executive Hideki Komiyama told Reuters in an interview.

"Looking ahead I think that we see this as one of the important operating systems, there is no doubt," he said.

Loss-making Sony Ericsson, a joint venture of Japan's Sony Corp (6758.T) and Sweden's Ericsson (ERICb.ST), has decided to use three operating systems in its high-end phones -- Symbian, Android and Microsoft's Windows Mobile.

"Our focus is on how can we differentiate from the competitors using the same operating system," Komiyama said, adding the firm was focusing its investments on user experience and user interface.

Sony Ericsson reported earlier on Friday a deep loss for January-March and said it aims to cut some 20 percent of jobs as it looks to return to profit. [nLH291382]

Chinese handset users to enjoy services for now

Millions of gray market handset users in India can now breathe easy.

The third directive issued by the Department of Telecom (DoT) asking the cellular operators to terminate services Chinese handsets with 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI), by April 13 has expired - like its predecessors !

The non-compliance of the directive on part of the cellular operators seems to be apparent: Which cellular operator would like to loose their subscriber share among estimated 25 million gray market handset or illegally manufactured Chinese handset users in India ?

The DOT is seeking a ban on the service to gray market handsets, as their 15-digit IMEI makes it difficult for operators to trace the caller by IMEI, unlike in the case of genuine handsets that come embedded with 16-digit IMEI that be tracked at the operators end.

The DOT had issued the directives to the cellular phone operators after Intelligence agencies and genuine mobile phone manufactures had raised the alarm over the threat posed by the gray market handsets.

Equipment Identity Register

The government has already issued directions to the mobile operators for installing Equipment Identity Register (EIR) so that calls originating from handsets with fake or without any IMEI or International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers would not be processed.

The first deadline issued by DOT to the operators was January, 2009, which was later extended till March and then April. Though the DoT has also warned of a imposing a financial penalty which can be doubled every 15 days, the warnings seems to have gone in vain.

The communication ministry has also warned operators that they would not be allowed to add new subscribers from 15 April, 2009, if they fail to put systems in place that can ban calls on IMEI number-free handsets.

The 15 digit issue:

Whenever a user makes a call from the his handset the 16-digit IMEI on genuine handsets gets reflected at the operator's network thus enabling lawful interception of all calls and identification of the caller.

Mobile operators store the 16-digit IMEI in Equipment Identity Register (EIR) so that a stolen handset can be barred from usage. But in the case of handsets with 15-digit IMEI, they are unable to do so.

Challenges before operators:

The Director General of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) refused to make a statement on when the operators would be able to implement the DoT directive when CIOL contacted the association.

However, an official with COAI stated that the association has sought more time from the department as it has demonstrated a new software that will enable the even the handsets with 15-digit IMEI to be tracked.
The cellular operators have jointly developed a software, which when uploaded to non-IMEI handsets would provide these devices with a unique number.

The COAI contention has been that it needs more time to educate customers to go in for a software update. It has also been arguing that this is the best possible solution as most subscribers who use cheap Chinese handsets would not be able to afford a new phone.

Security agencies' objection:

The COAI has already demonstrated this software to security agencies. But, it is learnt that the IB has pointed out that the software allows users to modify and rewrite genuine IMEI numbers.

An Intelligence Bureau (IB) official was recently quoted stating that the the IB was of the opinion that the software cannot be allowed to be implemented or sold in the present form as it would lead to defeating the basic purpose of tracking IMEIs.

Meanwhile, a number of operators including MTNL, Reliance Communications, Bharti Airtel, BSNL and Tata Teleservices have already informed the DoT that they are in the process of installing the EIRs.

COAI set to challenge TDSAT ruling on dual technology in Supreme Cour

The members GSM operators of the main telecom industry lobby group of India - COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India) - are not happy with the recent ruling by TDSAT (Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal), according to which, operators are allowed to provide mobile services in both GSM and CDMA platform with the same license. Hence, COAI has decided to challenge the TDSAT ruling.

Earlier, Government had permitted the operators like Tata Teleservices and reliance Communications to provide GSM and CDMA based mobile services. The start-up spectrum was granted to the operators. RCom has already launched its GSM-based mobile services. The COAI had challenged the move in TDSAT, but TDSAT also ruled in favour of the dual technology.

The main members of COAI include Aircel, Bharti Cellular, BPL Cellular, Hutch (Now Vodafone), Idea Cellular, Reliance Telecom, and Spice Communications

ISRO gearing up to launch RISAT and ANUSAT

Seeking to beef up the nation's defence surveillance capabilities, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up to launch its first Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT), along with micro educational satellite - ANUSAT, on Monday. According to ISRO, the RISAT is capable of keeping surveillance of the country and watching the earth through fog and clouds, in fact, in all-weather conditions, day and night.

ISRO has reported that the (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) PSLV (C-12) will be blasted off between 6.30 and 7 a. m, with the RISAT (Radar Imaging Satellite) and ANUSAT, a micro educational satellite developed by Anna University, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, an island by the sea 100km north of Chennai. The 230 tonne rocket will take off carrying weight around 350 kg - 300 kg RISAT and 50 kg ANUSAT. The rocket will put RISAT into a circular orbit 550km - 560 km from the earth, about 17 minutes after the launch, while ANUSAT will be put into low earth orbit.

ISRO spokesperson S Satish told, "Everything is progressing smoothly. Currently checks are done on the integration of the stages of the rocket as well as the satellites. The countdown will start 48 hours before take-off (Saturday morning). As of now, everything is going on fine. Risat, which can penetrate clouds and observe earth under all climatic conditions, will be extremely useful in disaster management."

According to ISRO, RISAT is different from previous remote sensing satellites, as it uses Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), equipped with several antennas to receive signals that are processed into high-resolution pictures. The SAR developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) gives RISAT defence capabilities and makes it different from previous weather satellites. ISRO is working to develop its own SAR to be used in the bigger satellite, 1,780-kg RISAT, which ISRO is developing and will launch later sometime. Satish said, "Risat has been put together with inputs from the Israeli Space Agency (ISA), but the satellite images will be used solely for Indian purposes."

The Indian space agency has claimed that RISAT will be beneficial in mapping and managing natural disasters, such as floods and landslides, besides amplifying the defence surveillance capabilities of the nation. The lighter RISAT has been developed in the wake of terrorist attacks.

ANUSAT is the first satellite developed by an Indian university (Anna University). ANUSAT project director P V Ramakrishna said, "Scores of students and faculty members from different streams have been working on Anusat for six years." ANUSAT is a store-and-forward communication satellite that will help in transfer of confidential academic materials, including exam question papers, to prevent question paper leakages. It will also help in monitoring drought and wasteland, urban planning and other studies. The launch of RISAT and ANUSAT will mark the 15th flight of PSLV.

ISRO To Launch Radar Imaging Satellite On Apr. 20

The Indian Space Research Organization or ISRO will launch its first 300-kg radar imaging satellite, Risat, from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on Monday. This imaging satellite, built by Israel Aerospace Industries, has all-weather capabilities, which means it can take pictures during day and night and under all-weather conditions.

In addition to surveillance applications, the spacecraft will keep a watch on movements on the borders and help the country in anti-infiltration and anti-terrorist operations and also cautions disasters like cyclones, floods as well as landslides. Risat will come in handy for defense applications as well.

ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C12 is expected to take off at around 6.45 a.m. on April 20 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, an island by the sea 100 km north of Chennai. Around 17 minutes later, the 300-kg Risat will be put in an orbit 550 km from the earth. The co-passenger on PSLV-C12 will be a microsatellite called Anusat, a 40-kg satellite built by Chennai-based Anna University. The countdown would commence 48 hours before the take-off (Saturday morning).

Anusat will be a store-and-forward communication satellite that will enable transfer of confidential academic material like exam question papers, to get rid of leakages.

Unlike ISRO's previous remote sensing satellites that used optical imaging, Risat uses synthetic aperture radar (SAR) equipped with several antennas to obtain signals that will be processed into high-resolution pictures.

Nokia eyes dual-SIM mobile phone market

With the dual-SIM card mobile companies facing rough weather after the Madurai-based independent patent owner Somasundaram Ramkumar filed for patent infringement, Finnish handset maker, Nokia is eyeing an entry into this category.

The Madras High Court has deferred the hearing of the petition on the patent issue to April 27.
Vineet Taneja, head-marketing, Nokia India, told Financial Chronicle that dual-SIM card was a category the handset vendor was working on. “We are not in this space, but we want to fill this segment,” he said.

Betting high on the Indian market, the company is planning to launch N97 in India with the Ovi Store pre-loaded on the mobile. Ovi is Nokia’s concept of internet services. It is a store of applications, games, maps, music, mail and access to third party services.

The company is schedule to launch N97 by June. Taneja said that the company had lined up some of the mobile phones to be launched in the Indian market soon. It plans to launch handset models 6700 and 6303 in the coming months.

Nokia on Wednesday launched its Eseries range, Nokia E75, with the Nokia messaging service. It also announced the launch of its email solutions for Nokia devices. Financial Chronicle, in August last year, first reported that Nokia was planning to launch its email services, competing with the BlackBerry mail solutions offered by Research In Motion (RIM).

The Nokia E75 will support all features of Nokia Messaging Service — an array of third party email solutions, such as Gmail, Yahoo, Rediffmail, Sify, Indiatimes, Net4, Hotmail and In.com amongst others, thereby providing direct access to over 90 per cent of the world’s corporate inboxes as well.

According to industry experts, there are around five million mobile subscribers using email on mobile. Taneja said that Nokia would target these customers to offer its email solutions.

DLF to exit from four IT/ITeS SEZs

India's largest property developer DLF on Friday said the company has asked the government to denotify four IT/ITES special economiczones (SEZ). In a disclosure to the stock exchanges, the company said that it "has requested the ministry of commerce and industry for denotification of four IT/ITES SEZs."

A senior company official said the four SEZs that the company want to surrender are located at Bhubaneshwar, Gandhinagar, Kolkata and Sonepat (Haryana).

"The global economic downturn and the IT sector slowdown have affected demand for office space, so we approached the government for denotification," the official added.

The disclosure came after stock exchanges sought clarifications from DLF on media reports that said the company plans to surrender five out of its nine notified IT/ITeS SEZs due to cash crunch.

Earlier, the company had surrendered its 40-acre IT SEZ in Delhi. The entire real estate sector is facing a credit crunch forcing them to put on hold many of their expansion plans and projects. The slowdown in the IT sector has added uncertainty leading to slump in demand for office space.

As per Indian laws, SEZs cannot be surrendered once they become operational. DLF, however, has not started work on the five SEZs that it wants to surrender.

Earlier, a senior commerce ministry official had said DLF has nine (notified) IT/ITeS special economic zones, of which the company had planned to drop five and "they (DLF) have made an application and it will come up after the elections".

According to official data, the land banks of DLF's four notified SEZs are: 10.12 hectares in Gandhinagar, 10.24 hectares in Sonepat, 10.23 hectares in Bhubaneswar and 10.48 hectares in Kolkata.

As per industry sources, firms like DLF and Parsvanath were unable to raise funds for their SEZ projects. Earlier, Parsvanath had put on hold its 12 IT/ITeS SEZ projects.

After touching an intra-day low of Rs 226.55, the scrip of DLF today settled 1.75 per cent down at Rs 230.55 on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

US Video Game Sales In 1Q Kept Pace With Record-Setting 2008

U.S. sales of video games and consoles have so far kept pace with the industry's strong 2008, according to new data from NPD Group, a market tracker.

For the quarter, total U.S. video game revenue was $4.25 billion, which matches sales from last year's first quarter, according to NPD. During the quarter, video game sales slipped slightly, but a 1% increase in video game consoles, led by sales of Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s (NTDOY) Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Xbox 360, made up the difference, NPD reports.

A weak March, when sales fell 17%, makes it "tempting to jump to the conclusion that the sky is starting to fall," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "It was a pretty healthy month for sales, overall."

Analysts though are warning that the industry is in for a tough few months ahead, when overall growth is expected to slow dramatically. The culprit was last year's biggest-selling games debuted between March and June, which created big spikes in both game and console sales, and tough comparisons for sales of video games a year later.

Had March 2008 been a month of little merit, and not the debut of one of the top-selling Wii games of all times, March 2009 in the video-game industry would likely have shown much more impressive growth. Rather, NPD data suggest overall revenue and revenue from games and consoles each fell between 17% and 18%.

Bank of America analyst Justin Post sees the season of tough comparisons ending some time after June and solid growth returning to the video game industry in the back half of the year. "But it could be a difficult few months for this group," he noted earlier this week.

"We're only just finishing up the first quarter, and from a Nintendo perspective, we're quite pleased," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, a Nintendo Co. Ltd. division. "In the end, though, it's the critical holiday period that typically accounts for half of our growth that we need to worry about."

The NPD data for March sales showed a month once again dominated by Nintendo, whose Wii motion-controlled console was the top-selling device, though sales slipped substantially from a year ago. Microsoft Xbox 360 console was the lone console to register growth, with sales growing 25% as earlier price cuts continue to resonate, Microsoft says.

COAI to challenge dual technology norm in SC

The lobby representing the incumbent GSM operators, COAI has decided to challenge the recent ruling by TDSAT allowing operators to offer mobile services in both GSM as well as CDMA platform with the same licence.

Government had earlier allowed the norm making it possible for operators like Tata Teleservices and reliance Communications to offer GSM as well as CDMA based mobile services. The operators were granted start-up spectrum as well. RCom has already launches its GSM-based mobile services.

COAI had challenged the norm in TDSAT. But TDSAT too ruled out in favour of the permission to allow dual technology.

Symmetrix and the death of monolithic arrays

EMC's Symmetrix V-Max, announced today, represents the death of monolithic storage arrays and the rise of combined scale-up/scale-out modular arrays built from commodity components tied together with ASICs, very clever software and geographical distance cluster interconnects. It's also a tribute to 3PAR's T-Class InServ design and solidifies a trend to modularity seen already with the DMX-4.

The basic V-Max building block is a pair of quad-core Xeon 2.3GHx (5400) processors, 16 host and 16 disk enclosure ports (8 each per Xeon quad-core), 128GB of global memory, an EMC ASIC to handle the global memory access, and the RapidIO interconnect endpoints.

EMC can now ride the Intel CPU evolution curve and we can look forward to Nehalem-based V-Max engines, roughly twice as powerful as the existing ones at the quad-core level. (V-Max Plus anybody?) These should plug in and play with the existing 5400 Xeon-based ones providing both a scale-up upgrade path and investment protection.

We know that V-Max can scale to 8 V-Max engines with the current release and that FAST software is coming to provide automated data movement between the V-Max storage tiers (flash disk - Fibre Channel disk - SATA disk).

Barry Burke, EMC's senior director and chief strategy officer for the Symmetrix Product Group, says that EMC is developing software to leverage flash drives as something more than just another tier of storage, but doesn't explain what that means. Certainly, in the future, we might see 2-tier V-Max arrays; ones with just a fast flash tier and a bulk storage SATA tier.

V-Max memory considerations

The 8-engine V-Max has eight sets of storage enclosures behind the engines combined into a single logical pool of storage capacity, with the storage processors enjoying the use of global memory made up from each engine's own 128GB local memory, and presumably combined and kept coherent by the EMC ASICs. Any access to memory by a V-Max processor is treated as a local access, and remote accesses are virtualised to seem local.

As well as enabling two kinds of memory access, one local and the other remote to a peer V-Max engine, the architectural design allows for a third kind of memory access and linkage. Burke describes it: "the Architecture allows for a third dimension of interconnect – a connection between different V-Max systems. This interconnect would not necessarily expand to share memory across all the nodes in two (or more) separate V-Max arrays, but it would allow multiple V-Max arrays to perform high-speed data transfers and even redirected I/O requests between different Symmetrix V-Max 'virtual partitions.'"

"This capability of the Architecture will be leveraged in the future to 'federate' different generations of V-Max arrays in order to scale to even greater capacities and performance, and will also be used to simplify technology refreshes. In the future, you’ll be able to “federate” a new V-Max with the one on your floor and non-disruptively relocate workloads, data and host I/O ports."

It seems to me that V-Max virtual partitions could have different characteristics. Data in a partition might be single instanced and compressed Celerra-style, for example.

InfiniBand rejected

V-Max uses an interconnect new to most of us - RapidIO. Burke states: "the first generation of the Symmetrix V-Max uses two active-active, non-blocking, serial RapidIO v1.3-compliant private networks as the inter-node Virtual Matrix Interconnect, which supports up to 2.5GB/sec full-duplex data transfer per connection – each 'director' has 2, and thus each 'engine' has 4 connections in the first-gen V-Max."

Why was RapidIO used and not InfiniBand? After all, RapidIO has evolved from bus technology whereas InfiniBand is already used in processor clusters and storage clusters (Isilon). Sun has just chosen Mellanox' 40Gbit/s InfiniBand ConnectX adapters and InfiniScale IV switch silicon for its new line of Sun Blade modular systems and Sun Datacenter Switches.

Jet Airways ties up with Brussels Airlines

Leading private carrier Jet Airways has entered into a 'code share agreement' with Belgium's Brussels Airlines to offer its passengers "seamless connectivity" with European cities, the company said on Friday.

Currently, Brussels Airlines is 70 percent owned by Belgium-based companies and 30 percent by Virgin Express, British entrepreneur Richard Branson's low-fare carrier.

It flies to over 50 destinations in 20 European countries, besides operating long-haul flights to eastern, central and western Africa.

The agreement would enable both airlines to leverage each other's network strengths and also significantly boost air travel on the Indo-European sector, Jet chief executive Wolfgang Prock-Schauer said in a statement.

The Indian carrier, which earlier scrapped its Mumbai-Shanghai-San Fransisco service along with a few other international services as part of its restructuring plans, hoped its agreement with Brussels Airlines would strengthen its existing international network.

"This will also offer seamless connectivity between India and Europe by offering our passengers convenient connections between Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai in India and 12 European code-share destinations," the statement said.

The code share destinations are Birmingham, Barcelona, Lyons, Madrid, Berlin, Paris, Manchester, Hamburg, Marseilles, Toulouse, Geneva and Vienna.

Jet flies daily to Brussels from Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. The airline also offers daily direct services to London from Mumbai and Delhi.

India gold trade hopes festival proves a bright spot

India's gold trade is desperately hoping a 12.5 percent drop in prices from an all-time high will ring in sales at a gold-buying festival later in April, a small window of opportunity before another dull spell.

India has been the world's biggest consumer of gold for years, but imports slumped 48 percent in 2008 to 396 tonnes from 759 the year-ago. Prices have risen by about 46 percent since April 2007.

"We are getting orders and also hopeful of getting more," said Ariez Tata, director with Cogent Jewellery, watching as 1,020 degree centigrade boiling gold alloy is poured into a casting machine at his workshop in a Mumbai suburb.

"This couple of months is the only chance to revive some sales as after this there will be a slack season of around four months," added Tata. The next gold buying festival is in October.

Akshaya Tritiya falls on April 27, when Indians, especially in the south, buy gold for lasting prosperity.

"People had suspended their buying when prices moved above 16,000 (rupees), though there is buying, it would revive if prices move to $850 (an ounce) (about 13,000 rupees)," said Nayan Pansare, an analyst who advises the jewellery industry.

Gold futures on the Multi Commodity Exchange rose to a record high of 16,040 rupees per 10 grams on Feb. 20 as economic uncertainty fuelled safe haven buying.

"We expect demand to be good... at least symbolic demand should prop up sales," said Daman Prakash, director with MNC Bullion in Chennai.

Check Point wraps up Nokia Security Appliance buy

Security firm Check Point has wrapped up its acquisition of Nokia's security appliance business.

Originally announced at the end of last year, the move sees a 12-year partnership between the two businesses culminate in Check Point taking over Nokia's interests in the market completely.

"Over the last few years Check Point has steadily enhanced its appliance portfolio. The acquisition of the Nokia hardware security business vaults Check Point to the appliance forefront," said Alex Smith, a research analyst at Canalys.

"With a wider appliance portfolio, Check Point expands its market reach, particularly among large enterprises."

Check Point has said that it will soon introduce a line of all-inclusive IP appliances pre-loaded with either Check Point NGX R65 or Check Point R70, which is based on the company's Software Blade Architecture unveiled at its annual Check Point Experience event in Paris recently.

In the interim, both companies are hoping to minimise the disruption to existing customers by allowing businesses to purchase former Nokia IP hardware running Check Point security software.

This will eliminate the need to obtain two separate licences from two different vendors, easing procurement and deployment, the firms said. Similarly, existing Nokia customer support contracts will be immediately supported by Check Point, including support for older platforms and operating system versions.

"Check Point now leads the security appliance market with an unprecedented variety of security solutions. Through the acquisition, we will be able to better meet customers' needs and preferences with the latest security software on the leading hardware platforms," said Gil Shwed, chairman and chief executive at Check Point.

"Our unique Software Blade architecture allows customers to select the exact security protections they need for a given environment, and our comprehensive line of appliances lets customers deploy their custom gateway on the hardware of their choice."

India's high-tech spy satellite to go aloft Monday

It now appears confirmed that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will put a smaller, improvised version of its planned 1,780-kg radar imaging spy satellite (RISAT) in orbit on Monday. The payload will have a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) with the capability to maintain day-and-night watch of the Earth's surface, under all-weather conditions.

Though ISRO has previously launched imaging satellites, none have such a versatile, 24x7 capability. While previous versions of the Indian Remote Sensing Satellites (IRS) were utilized mainly for resources monitoring and management, with incidental utilization for defence purposes and deployed optical imaging, RISAT is equipped with a synthetic aperture radar which will transmit signals which will be processed into high-resolution pictures.

Though the satellite will have its usefulness in civilian areas, such as mapping and managing natural disasters, its main purpose will be to maintain a round-the-clock check on movements in and around the country's borders. ISRO sources have now confirmed that this lighter version of the planned RISAT was indeed assembled on a war footing after the Mumbai 26x11 attacks, with inputs from the Israeli Space Agency.

Sources, however, stressed that the imagery would be utilized solely by agencies within the country.

Isro's workhorse launcher, the PSLV (C-12) will take off at 6.45am from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, and will put the 300-kg payload into orbit 550-km above the Earth some 17 minutes later. Also piggybacking will be a micro-satellite, Anusat, developed by Anna University, Chennai.

The countdown will start 48 hours before take-off, i.e. Saturday morning.

Anusat is the first satellite to be assembled by an Indian university. The project has involved scores of students and faculty members from different streams for six years. Anusat will be a store-and-forward communication satellite that will enable transfer of confidential academic material such as question papers.

Sony Ericsson to cut 2,000 jobs after losses

Mobile phone maker

Sony Ericsson on Friday said it would cut 2,000 more jobs after it swung to a loss of 293 mn euros (384 mn dollars)

in the first quarter of the year.

The group, which reported losses in the third and fourth quarters of last year, had warned in March that its first-quarter figures would be weak because of recessions in major economies that have hit demand for its handsets.

With its margins eroded, sales in free-fall and a lack of new products in strategic sectors, Sony Ericsson vowed to deepen job cuts announced last year in a bid to reduce costs and return to profitability.

"The additional cost saving programme announced today will include a further reduction in the global workforce of approximately 2,000 people," the company said in a statement.

Sony Ericsson had announced a cost-cutting programme in July 2008 that included 2,000 job cuts by the end of the first half of 2009 which was expected to bring its work force to around 10,000.

The global economic slowdown has cut demand for consumer electronics and established handset makers such as Sony Ericsson and market leader Nokia must also contend with the runaway success of Apple's iPhone, which dominates the high-end segment of the market.

Nokia reported a 90-percent drop in its first-quarter net profit and a more than 25-percent decline in sales on Thursday.

Sony Ericsson, created in 2001 in a merger between Ericsson of Sweden and Sony of Japan, has been trying to focus its business on fast-growing emerging markets in order to reduce dependence on the nearly saturated European zone.

As a result it entered the low-end market, where prices are lower and the competition is tougher, analysts say, but it has lacked the products to make a splash in emerging markets such as China and India.

The move was "not a good idea at all," Evli bank telecoms analyst Michael Andersson told AFP, explaining that it was hard to make money in that segment without huge volumes.

How secure is the U.S. communications network?

A simple snip of a few fiber-optic communications cables left thousands of people in Silicon Valley and throughout parts of the San Francisco Bay Area without phone, Internet, or wireless service for more than 12 hours on Thursday.

The San Jose Police Department is investigating the incidents, which took place in two different locations in San Jose and San Carlos and classified as acts of vandalism. Now that the network is up and running again, people are asking how difficult is it to take down the nation's communications network? And should we be more worried about the fiber optic cables that ring our communities and crisscross the country carrying all of our communications?

"A couple of well-placed attacks could do a lot of damage to the communications network," said Sam Greenholtz, co-founder and principal of Telecom Pragmatics, a consulting and research firm specializing in the telecommunications market. "And it's not really that hard to figure out where the fiber optic cables are laid and to get access to them."

That said, Sgt. Ronnie Lopez of the San Jose Police Department said there is no reason yet to suspect terrorism in this case. But the FBI has been briefed on the case.

AT&T is offering a $250,000 reward to anyone who can provide information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the vandals.

"We are aggressively working with law enforcement authorities to see that those responsible for this willful act are apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," the company said in a statement Friday.

AT&T also said in a press release that following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, its networks were declared National Critical Infrastructures, which means that anyone who tampers with, destroys, or disrupts the company's network or its components is in violation of both federal and state laws.

Wondering about vulnerabilities
Still, with recent reports that our nation's electrical grid has gotten less secure due to technological advances, incidents such as this one leaves many wondering how vulnerable the communications network really is.

I talked to a few experts about how telecommunications networks are built and how they operate. And I've concluded that while it's somewhat easy to figure out where fiber is laid and to gain access to the fiber infrastructure in the ground, it's much harder to actually cause major damage unless you know what you're doing.

Let me explain. In the AT&T fiber cut case, it was fairly easy for the perpetrator to access the fiber-optic cables that were eventually cut. Sgt. Lopez said that it appeared that whoever cut the fibers simply lifted the manhole cover, went down the ladder, and cut two cables.

But knowing exactly which manhole cover to open and which cables to cut that would cause widespread damage to the network is another story.

Greenholtz, who was a former manager in the Planning and Engineering Group at Verizon where he worked for nearly 28 years, said that causing a network outage of this magnitude was likely orchestrated by someone who not only knew which manholes provided access to AT&T fibers, but also knew which places on the network were most vulnerable and could cause the most damage.

"The manhole covers are not locked," he said. "Anybody can open them and go down there. But most of these networks have redundancy and diversity built-in to the architecture, so if you cut a cable, it reroutes itself and recovers."

Greenholtz explained that someone with knowledge of the network would know the most vulnerable points in the network and could pinpoint those areas.

Built in rings
AT&T declined to discuss specifics of the company's network architecture, but experts say that the Baby Bell phone companies, such AT&T's predecessor SBC Communications, typically built their regional fiber networks in rings. The rings themselves would help provide protection against an outage, because if a line were cut, the traffic could just reverse itself in less than 50 milliseconds and go the other direction around the ring.

But the phone companies also typically ran redundant lines that are spaced some distance apart from each other, so that if one line is cut, there is also a separate fiber carrying the traffic. And to ensure that the redundant line can handle excess traffic in an emergency, most phone companies run these systems at 50 percent capacity.

(Credit: Google Maps)

The fiber-optic cables that were cut in San Carlos, which were owned by Sprint Nextel, appear to have worked in this way. The traffic was quickly rerouted to another path, and service to Sprint's business customers was not interrupted.

Unlike regional networks, which have multiple fiber rings running through and between cities, undersea cables that connect continents do not have this type of redundant architecture because it's much too expensive to build it that way. This means that undersea cables are particularly vulnerable to fiber cuts. But because they are deployed beneath the ocean floor, they tend to be more difficult to tamper with. That said, cables are severed and massive outages do occur from time to time.

By contrast, some networks in highly trafficked regions or networks that service critical customers have even more redundancy built into them. Michael Howard, a principal analyst at telecommunications research firm Infonetics Research, said that carriers such as Deutsche Telekom have begun building meshed networks so that there is a third path for traffic if fibers are cut or there is some other disruption on the network.

"The more traffic there is on the route, the more redundancy the carrier provides," he said. "There are usually two aspects to a backup plan for networks. One is providing a diversity of virtual routes for the traffic, but the other is providing physically separate routes on separate fibers. I'd have to say the outage that occurred in Silicon Valley seems odd, given the traditional network architecture."

An inside job?
Indeed, AT&T's network failure seems to suggest that at least one other path that would have rerouted the traffic was also damaged or cut. Given that the police indicated that the incidents occurred in only two locations, San Jose and San Carlos, it seems likely that there was already some damage or issue happening on AT&T's network at the time the fiber was cut or the vandals managed to cut the ring in two places.

Of course, neither I nor any other expert could know this for sure. But the fact is that fibers are cut all the time in regional networks, and rarely do they cause massive outages that shut down entire regions for hours. Most of these incidents are accidents. Someone might be landscaping a yard and a back-hoe severs a cable. Or another utility worker accidentally damages a cable while working in the same manhole where communication cables are located.

"Fiber cuts happen more often than people realize," said Crystal Davis, a spokeswoman for Sprint Nextel. "It happens by accident all the time when someone is drilling or digging up a street. Or they're doing regular maintenance. We know this, and that's why traffic can be quickly rerouted."

This is also why Greenholtz believes that the AT&T fibers were likely cut by someone who knew the network and its potential weaknesses.

"If there was an ongoing maintenance issue on one side of the fiber ring that hadn't been addressed," he said. "And then the other side is cut, it would cause a major outage like the one AT&T experienced. But in order to cause that much damage, someone would have to know that. Otherwise, it was just a very lucky vandal."

More theories
This line of thinking has caused some bloggers to suspect that the vandal was a disgruntled former or current AT&T employee.

And some have even gone so far as to suggest that the perpetrator could be an unhappy union worker. AT&T is currently in contract negotiations with its largest union the Communications Workers of America, which represents some 80,000 workers at AT&T. Workers have already voted to strike if a new contract can't be agreed upon. So far, no date has been set for a strike, and Candice Johnson, a spokeswoman for the union said that the two sides are still negotiating.

But Johnson also said that the union was not involved in the vandalism and that claims that its members might be involved are unfounded.

"There is no basis for speculation that our members were involved in this act of vandalism," she said. "We are cooperating with authorities. We are currently at the bargaining table with AT&T management, and our workers are on the job. Our goal is to get a contract renewed."

Sgt. Lopez from the San Jose Police Department said that it's still too early in the investigation to talk about suspects or motives.

Regardless of whether the cables were cut by disgruntled employees or random vandals, the recent incident highlights the potential for such an attack to be undertaken on a broader scale by foreign terrorists, who may infiltrate our nation's telephone companies or gain access to information about the country's communications network. But Greenholtz and other experts say that because these networks have always been built with redundancy in mind, it would take a massive coordinated effort to target individual manholes and to cut fibers.

"If you really want to take down the communications network and cause damage, you'd probably target a central office," Greenholtz said.

A central office is the nerve center of a telecommunications network. It houses all the switching equipment and billing data for a particular region of the network. As an example, Greenholtz said that if a terrorist was able to damage Verizon's central office on 38th Street in Manhattan, communications services on Wall Street could be wiped out not just for a few hours, but likely for days, weeks, or even a month. Because these facilities are so critical, he said all the major phone companies have tight security.

Symantec: Security holes, malware spike in 2008

If you worry that the Internet is a scary place full of digital pickpockets and online identity thieves, your fears will be bolstered by the latest Symantec Internet Security Threat Report released.

The report finds huge increases in the number of security holes in software and the number of Internet threats, particularly attacks in which browsers are hijacked and forced to download malicious programs as people surf the Web.

Even visiting trusted Web sites isn't always safe. Most Web-based attacks target visitors to legitimate Web sites that have been compromised and that either serve up malicious content to the visitor or embed a malicious and invisible iframe on the page that surreptitiously redirects the user's browser to another Web server under an attacker's control, according to the report.

Attacks are traded in underground channels, with people buying and selling software that automates attacks or even entire botnets of infected computers that serve as spam armies, the report says. Stolen data is then marketed and offered up with price lists and guarantees. Oddly, the price of stolen data remained the same in 2008 despite the fact that the economy took a nose dive, said Zulfikar Ramzan, a technical director at Symantec Security Response.

The top Web-based attack in 2008 exploited the Microsoft IE ADODB.Stream Object File Installation Weakness vulnerability, while the top attacked vulnerabilty was the Microsoft Windows Server Service RPC Handling Remote Code Execution Vulnerability, according to the report.

Symantec detected nearly 1.66 malicious code threats, which represent 60 percent of the 2.6 million total malware threats Symantec has detected since it has been tracking this. The number of new malicious code signatures grew by 265 percent from 2007.

Here are other highlights for 2008 from Symantec's report:

Conficker

Infections of Conficker, also known as Downadup, have been particularly strong in Asia Pacific and Latin America, areas with some of the highest rates of software piracy. Pirated versions of software can not be automatically updates to receive security patches. The worm, which has infected millions of Windows-based PCs that are not patched, is now communicating with other infected machines via peer-to-peer, dropping a mystery payload and installing malware that masquerades as anti-virus software.

Identity fraud

Nearly 80 percent of confidential information threats exposed user data and 76 percent used used keystroke-logging to steal data like banking account credentials. Seventy-six of the phishing attacks attempted to lure victims to specific financial sector brands and one group--the Russian Business Network--is believed to be responsible for about half of the phishing incidents that occurred worldwide last year.

Twelve percent of all data breaches exposed credit card information, which is the most popular item for sale in the underground economy. Credit card data can range in price from 6 cents to $30, while bank account credentials range from $10 to $1,000 and e-mail accounts from 10 cents to $100. Most of the stolen credit card data for sale is from the U.S.

Most data breaches that could lead to identity fraud were in the education sector, while the financial sector was the top industry for identities exposed. SBI extends cheap loan offer till Sept

State Bank of India, the country’s largest lender, has decided to extend the special offer for auto and home loans till September.

Under the scheme, which was earlier valid till the end of April, the bank had frozen the interest rate on new home loans at 8 per cent during the first year, while the cost of auto loans was fixed at 10 per cent during the first year. Subsequently, the interest rate was to be revised to the prevailing rate.

Extending the scheme by five months, the bank also said today that top-up loans for home loan customers that are disbursed up to September 2009, would cost 8 per cent in the first year.

SBI reiterated that the special rates were aimed at stimulating demand. When it had first announced the special rate schemes, its rivals – including HDFC, the largest mortgage player – had termed the move as a teaser offer and had said that it would only result in borrowers shifting their accounts.

Subsequently, HDFC executives said that the move has not resulted in too many customers shifting to SBI to avail of the special offer. But the housing finance company responded by reducing its prime lending rate to enable its existing borrowers to avail of the lower interest rate regime.

While SBI has lowered its benchmark prime lending rate by 150 basis points since November, it has not participated in the latest round of rate cuts by public sector banks. Instead, it has come up with special loan schemes aimed at housing, auto and small and medium enterprises.

When contacted, Nanda Kumaran, SBI’s chief general manager for retail banking said the bank has sanctioned loans worth Rs 2,500 crore to over 20,000 customers under the special home loan scheme which was announced in February 2009.

Similarly, in case of the special auto loan scheme, he said, the response was good. Most auto loans disbursed through the scheme have been availed of by individuals purchasing entry-level models from Maruti, Hyundai and Tata Motors. These loans do not include the bookings for Nano, which opened last week.

“We have received a good response to the schemes and the extension by five months is expected to help boost the demand in the economy,” Nanda Kumaran added.

Executives at private sector banks said that SBI was among the most aggressive players in the car finance business at present and was among the highest loan disbursing lenders along with HDFC Bank. Many of the bigger players, such as ICICI Bank, Citi and Standard Chartered, have reduced the scale of operations in the auto loan market due to rising delinquency levels.

An SBI executive said that the country’s largest bank had managed to increase the outstanding retail credit portfolio to above Rs 1,00,000 crore at the end of March 2009, partly aided by the special offers and aggressive pricing of retail loans. It is targeting a 30 per cent growth in its retail portfolio during the current financial year.

As of December 2008, SBI’s auto loans portfolio was estimated at Rs 8,970 crore, 32.14 per cent higher than the Rs 6,788 crore it had disbursed till December 2007. Similarly, during the period, its home loan portfolio grew 21.56 per cent to Rs 52,062 crore, while the residual retail loan book was estimated to have increased by 30.82 per cent to Rs 37,077 crore.

Pfizer makes open offer to raise stake in Indian unit

The world’s biggest drug maker Pfizer Inc has offered about Rs 680 crore to raise its stake in its Indian subsidiary to 75 per cent from 41 per cent. The offer of Rs 675 per share, however, is unlikely to find takers, since Pfizer share price rose 10.02 per cent to close at Rs 685.4 per share on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today, analysts feel.

Pfizer is the first multinational drug company after Switzerland's Novartis to announce plans for a substantial stake increase in the Indian subsidiary in the past month. The growing interest among foreign pharmaceutical multinationals (MNCs) to increase their stakes in their Indian subsidiaries saw the share prices of publicly listed arms of foreign drug MNCs like GlaxoSmithkline (3 per cent), Aventis (5 per cent), and Wyeth (5 per cent) rise on the stock exchange today.

The Pfizer offer represents a premium of more than 8 per cent to Pfizer India's April 9 closing price. Novartis had offered a 23 per cent premium over the share price to acquire over 90 per cent in its Indian arm. Novartis had announced plans to invest about Rs 440 crore by offering Rs 351 for each share. Like Pfizer, Novartis shares are also traded at a price higher than the offer price in the open market (Rs 369.95).

The Novartis offer is likely to open next month, Pfizer said it expects to have the open offer in June.

“Both companies will have to revise their offer prices if they want investors to tender their shares in the public offer. Pfizer’s decision to offer an 8 per cent premium is not at all attractive and the market prices have risen above the offer price on the same day,” said Ranjit Kapadia, a Mumbai-based industry analyst.

Pfizer said the open offer price represents a premium of 22.3 per cent over Pfizer Ltd’s average share price during the 30 days ending April 9 on the BSE.

Industry analysts feel that the open offer is the first step towards de-listing the Indian subsidiaries for both the companies. “De-listing is the long term plan for multinational drug firms, as they function through wholly owned subsidiaries in most of the geographies world wide,” they say.

Several MNC drug companies operating in India have de-listed their entities from the market in the past. Two major drug players in India, Parke Davis and Pharmacia Healthcare, delisted from Indian stock exchanges following their merger with Pfizer, in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

Burroughs Welcome (India) was delisted in 2005 following its merger with UK-based Glaxo Smithkline Pharmaceuticals. SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals (India) was de-listed in 2002, following its merger with Glaxo India as part of the Glaxo-SmithKline global merger.

Among the domestic majors, American Remedies was delisted following its acquisition by Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and Bombay Drug and Pharma was delisted following its amalgamation with Strides Arcolab.
