Sony to Offer UMD-less Patapon 2 Game

Sony will launch Patapon 2 game for PlayStation Portable as digital download instead of UMD-based game. The information comes directly from the horse's mouth. Patapon 2 will be retailed in U.S. and the case will contain download voucher to download the game from PlayStation Store for $15 (Rs. 770 approx.). The game will be available for download on May 5, in retail as well as PlayStation Store.

The first Patapon entirely impressed us with great replay value and kept us pining for multiplayer option. And now, we anticipate Patapon 2 to arrive in India soon, since the game has multiplayer mode and is sequel to the first Patapon game. Patapon 2 was released in Europe and Japan last year. Ars Technica reported the rumor that Sony would be offering Patapon 2 in digital version. Later the news got confirmed by Sony.

Recently, Sony was rumored to be working on next-generation PSP console that won't have UMD slot. Also, offering games as digital download isn't something new since Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have been offering games and other downloadable content via respective console-centric stores online.

Patrick Seybold, senior director of corporate communications at SCEA, said, "We're considering a digital only format for the Patapon 2 release as a one time test case as we continue to explore consumer preferences for digital content." Sony didn't ward off any possibility of touchscreen or sliding PSP 2 but kept harping on digital download content. Sony is now looking to try digital download offerings for their handheld platform.
